When did it suddenly become cool to hate everything? It's a growing problem, especially in the entertainment world, and no one benefits from an increasingly hard to please, pessimistic audience.

These are really sketchy, and they're the oldest watchmen fan art I have. But I still really enjoy them.
When I read this book, I was really drawn to his character because I agree with his ideology and philosophy. I'm completely at a loss to understand why he's cast as crazy all the time. I see things like this in the news... [link] ... and I wonder why he (and people like him) aren't around. Most people on a daily basis see things that range from cruelty, to abuse to outright atrocity. I dont understand why everyone turns away. A lot can be accomplished by taking a stand. It's never going to be the popular option. But it's the right one. |

I think what people find hard to connect to in this character is the absolutism. The literal black and white quality that they persevere and that is represented in his mask. The rejection of the gray area where we create our excuses for the way we live and what we do and do not do. Its that hypocritical quality that we always rail against, but in the end slipping into because its comfortable and easy. No one wants to do the work, to take the stand, to stop the cycle and live outside the gray.
What I think the problem is that because most people see that its impossible to live completely free of hypocrisy no one thinks to even try. Because it takes effort, no one is willing to put forth any effort. But to me its kinda like not showering just because you will get dirty during the day. You still have to put forth the effort.
I guess my point is that I adore Rorschach because I can understand his point of view as well as other philosophies in Watchmen, and attempt to live up to a stricter since of human coherence. And that I agree with you.

I think part of Rorschach's appeal is that he does what people, deep down, really want to do to criminals. Very few will admit wishing that they could set a child rapist on fire (or something just as extreme).
People want blood for child rape and murder, but polite society doesn't allow for it.
While there is no excuse for letting things like watching a rape, there are psychological explanations for it (again, not excuses, just explanations of how it happens). There is the bystander effect that is actually quite complicated. Remember the Kitty Genovese case? That really happened. I won't go into those now since it would be a long discussion.
Again, let me reiterate that it isn't an excuse--just a possible explanation. Excusing and explaining behavior are two different things.
